I have signed a publishing agreement for my second novel 'The Geography of Friendship', with University of Queensland Press. Publication is set for July 2018.

Not all of the Tarkine/Takanya was beautiful. Some areas of it were ravaged by fire that burnt so hot in areas back in February that there’s been little recovery of the trees, other areas are scarred by logging, mining and tailing dams, and some of the rivers and creeks are contaminated with heavy metals. It is a weird juxtaposition of beauty and destruction, but I was so pleased to have been able to spend time in the beauty of this outstanding region of Lutruwita/Tasmania. #tarkine #takanya #lutruwita #tasmania

I’m not surprised I AM NANNERTGAROOK by @tasma_walton won this year’s ARA Historical Novel Prize (along with DUSK by @robbie_gc_arnott) or why it’s making its way onto ‘Best of 2025’ lists. The novel speaks to the heart of the consequences of the abduction and enslavement of Indigenous women and children by sealers with colonisation. It begins by laying the groundwork of all Nannertgarook stood to lose with her abduction: her family and kin, Country, ceremonies, knowledge, and the lore and law she was yet to be taught by her elders. She is taken to ever more isolated islands with no elders to teach her the things she yearns to know. But love for the memory of what she’s lost, love for the many children she subsequently has, and her determination to teach them what cultural knowledge she does carry, sustains her throughout her life and sustains us, her readers, through the many challenges of her existence. The book is based on the true story of Tasma’s ancestor and is written with such beauty, authority, wisdom and courage that it’s impossible to look away, and by looking in, it’s impossible to deny who the real savages were and the destruction they wrought upon a millenia-old civilisation. #iamnannertgarook #tasmawalton #prizewinninghistoricalfiction @bundyipublishing

Such a fun and fascinating conversation between @sofielagunabooks and @fionastager @avidreader bookshop this evening where they spoke about Sophie’s new novel THE UNDERWORLD. The book opens with fourteen year old Martha facing the challenges of starting at boarding school and trying to find her tribe, which she does quickly when befriended by other nerdy Latin and Classic lovers. These are passions that follow her into adulthood and inform her preoccupations with Greek and Roman mythology and her imaginings of what it would be like to travel into the Underworld. @penguinbooksaus #sophielaguna #theunderworld
